The diminutive Israil Gurung learnt the ropes in the loping hills of Kalimpong and Shillong before he was picked by the Sports Authority of India for further training. The teenager however moved to Delhi for his first professional stint with Hindustan FC where he blossomed under the encouraging care of Bernard Oparanozie who then sent him to Clifford Chukwuma at Sporting Clube de Goa. Gurung instead found a new home at the Sesa Football Academy who play in the second division. It was an important learning curve in Gurung’s career and Churchill Brothers soon came calling for the utility player who can play along both wings or in an attacking midfield role. He has gained a reputation as a super sub who can come in and make decisive interventions or score critical goals and has been part of the successful run of the Varca-based club.
- Stint with Hindustan FC was the launch pad for a successful career.
- Winner, I-League (2012-13), with Churchill Brothers, Durand Cup (2013) and IFA Shield (2014) with Mohammedan Sporting.
- Scored vital goals when it mattered for Churchill Brothers.
