A part of its efforts to strengthen the party’s organisational base in Darjeeling Hills, the CPI-M is preparing to visit people door-to-door and highlight an autonomy protected by the Indian Constitution for the development of the three Hill sub-divisions.
A decision to this effect was taken during the 21st Darjeeling district conference of the party held at Naxalbari near Siliguri and that ended yesterday.
According to a senior CPI-M activist and Darjeeling district secretariat body member from the Hills, KB Watter, party workers will start campaigning by highlighting regional autonomy within the state and guaranteed by the Indian Constitution.
“The autonomous body for the Hills must be more powerful than the present one, which does not have power like a panchayat body. The autonomous body within the state should be formed comprising all departments of the state, except two–Home and Judiciary,” Mr Watter said.
“After completion of the party’s state conference, a booklet will be published in the Nepali language on the subject and party workers will start campaigning door-to-door to create an organization base in the Hills. The booklets will be circulated among the people during the campaigning,” he added.
