Roshan Giri laid the foundation stone for Panighatta HSS

Mirik : Just a week after the GTA had announced plans to transform Panighatta Higher Secondary School into a model school, GTA Education Department in-Charge Roshan Giri today laid the foundation stone for the up-gradation of the school building. The construction cost for the two-storeyed building on a 624 sq m area is expected to touch Rs1.23 crore. It has been learnt that the funds for the construction will come from the Rural Infrastructural Development Fund (RIDF) and the contract has been awarded to a company called Greenline.

Speaking at the occasion, Giri said the RIDF will be responsible for constructing the school building according to the GTA agreement. He added the GTA has plans to construct similar model schools in 25 villages. Further, Giri announced the building of Sukna High School will soon be renovated and a new building erected for Nirpania School.

"The GTA education head said as many as 90 new high schools and 16 junior high schools will be constructed within the GTA area, each at an estimated cost of Rs36 lakh."

He added if need be, 53 more schools can be constructed by the regional administration. As part of the process of establishing eight multi-disciplinary colleges, new buildings will be constructed for Mirik College and Bijanbari Degree College, while new colleges will come up in Gorubathan and Pedong. Claiming new colleges will also be established in the plains and the Terai, Giri said the GTA is serious about developing the educational infrastructure of the Darjeeling hills.
