The Central Board of Secondary Education has finally accorded approval for inclusion of 4 local languages viz; Rai, Gurung, Tamang and Sherpa for the benefit of students of Sikkim belonging to these Communities from the session 2015-16. They have also allotted subject codes 131(Rai), 132(Gurung), 133(Tamang) and 134(Sherpa) languages. Inclusion of these four languages in the CBSE Curriculum in addition to three languages viz; Bhutia, Lepcha and Limboo included earlier. This has fulfilled the commitment of the State Government for inclusion of these languages in CBSE curriculum and has also been able to satisfy the persistent demand of students of these communities to afford them an opportunity to study their mother tongue at a higher level. This will further afford a unique opportunity for scholars of these languages to enrich them with more literature and research. Further, this also proves the commitment of the State Government towards development of State languages and fulfills the aspiration of people of different communities.

It may also be noted here that State Human Resource Development Department had already submitted draft text books for these languages to CBSE for their introduction in the curriculum once the approval is granted. Further, the HRD Department had also submitted a list of qualified candidates who can teach these languages in the schools of Sikkim once they are introduced. This will now pave the way for introduction of these 4 languages at further higher level including university level in subsequent years.
