“I have a meeting with the chief minister of Sikkim, Pawan Kumar Chamling regarding the grant of tribal status to 11 Gorkha communities, for which I will be going to Gangtok on 23 August,” Gurung said, adding, “The GTA has already raised this issue with union ministers and Chamling too has been working on it.” Gurung was speaking in a press meet at the GJMM party office in Patlebash on Wednesday.

It may be mentioned that a GTA delegation led by Gurung and Darjeeling MP SS Ahluwalia had met the union minister of tribal affairs, Jual Oram in Delhi for the same on 10 August.

After the meeting, Gurung had said the tribal minister had given them “a positive hearing”’and had called for a meeting with the ministry of tribal affairs, registrar general of India and GTA in Delhi, to discuss the modalities for including the communities in the ST list, later in September.
Gurung also said that he will be leaving for Delhi and Vindhaychal for his pre-planned pilgrimage after the 23 August meeting, due to which he will not be able to meet chief minister Mamata Banerjee, while she visits Darjeeling on 24 August. “However, the GTA delegation will be there to welcome her. Deputy chief of GTA, Col Ramesh Alley will also speak on the Clean and Green Project, to be held on 24 August in Chowrastha,” Gurung said.
