Lepcha Development Board organized a Tribal Handicraft Exhibition

Kalimpong - With an aim to preserve and promote the traditional art of handicraft among the tribal communities of the hills, the Lepcha Development Board today organized a Tribal Handicraft Exhibition in the premises of the Lepcha Youth Hostel in Bongbusty. The exhibition, sponsored by the Tribal co-operative Marketing Development Federation of India, saw participation of artists from Lepcha, Tamang, Emmi, Sherpa and Subba communities.

SK Guraiya from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs was the chief guest of the exhibition presided over by LDB president Langsong Tamsang.  Addressing the function Guraiya said, “Our prime objective is to promote the art and culture of the tribal communities. We will make a selection from among the handicrafts in the exhibition and send them to Delhi. The selected items will be kept for sale in 35 tribal shops all around the country.” He stated this effort of the department will lead to development of the tradition, art and culture of the tribal communities. “The work has begun here and we are happy about it. If the administration too comes ahead with a helping hand the process of development of the tribes will hasten up” he stated.

Claiming support on administrative level Kalimpong SDO Radhika K Ayer said, “The administration is ready for this. We have already finalized two sites for tribal shops and we will soon open the shops to sell the handicrafts of the tribal artists.”

The occasion also saw presence of LDB vice-president Yungsung Simik, secretary G Namchu, executive members NT Lepcha, PT Simik, Sonam Thsiring Lepcha, ILTA president Dorjee T Lepcha, Sonam T Bhutia from Emmi Bhutia Association, Sanjay Moktan from Tamang Youth Association and Sekhar Subba from Subba Association among others.  As many as 32 handicrafts artists took part in today’s exhibition and articles of six artists have been selected to be sent to Delhi.

The two day Gorkha National Congregation organized by Bharatia Gorkha Parisangh to press on the demand for Gorkhaland, kicked off today at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The first day of mass rally being co-organized by Gorkhaland Task Force saw presence of top leaders of BGP and various pro-Gorkhaland political parties along with over a thousand supporters. On the occasion BGP national president Dr. Enos Das Pradhan, executive president CP Giri, General Secretary Pravakar Dewan, members Sukhman Moktan, Munish Tamang, Arun Upadhayay and R Moktan along with CPRM General Secretary Taramani Rai, GRNM president Dawa Pakhrin among others shared the dais. Addressing the supporters, who had come from Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal, Haryana, Punjap, UP, Jharkhand, Sikkim, West Bengal and North Eastern states, the BGP leadership pressed the central government must address the demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland in a just manner.

BGP President Pradhan asserted the Gorkha community as a linguistic minority is facing political insecurity and identity crisis and only the formation of Gorkhaland can guarantee an enduring solution to this problem. He urged the political parties and apolitical organizations to come into unison with sincerity to take the demand ahead pressing that only a united and determined struggle from the community can win a separate state for them. He also expressed optimism saying the community which has hit the road with a statehood demand will definitely achieve it someday. 

The mass congregation was also addressed by CPRM leader Taramani Rai who slammed the GJM alleging of staging drama to fool the people. He said, “Even though the GJM has already reverted to GTA, it held demonstrations at Janatar Mantar in demand of Gorkhaland.This was a total drama.” Similarly addressing the gathering GRNM president Dawa Pakhrin stated the Gorkhaland movement has lost its direction in the current political backdrop and opined the identity movement of the Gorkhas must be spearheaded by BGP. 

The first day function of Gorkha congregation was also addressed by Arun Upadhayay, CP Giri, Col. VK
Sharma, Narayan Bhandary, Bhupendrashigh Chettri among others. Today’s program was also marked by a musical presentation from child artists of Kalimpong Barnamala Pariwar and its founder Dewasis Mothey. A musical album “Rahane Vo” was also eleased in the function. BGP members rallied from Ramlila Maidan to
Jantar mantar where the demonstration was held. Meanwhile BGP Secretary Munish Tamang informed it has been decided that a joint team of BGP and GTF will submit a petition at the PMO.

Seminar on Gorkhaland on 22nd Sep at Nehru Memorial Museum Delhi

A seminar on Gorkhaland and the demand for smaller states to be held on September 22nd 2013 at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Auditorium, Teen Murti House from 10 am to 4.30 pm. Organised by the Darjeeling Foundation, initiated by Swaraj Thapa (Senior Journalist) and a few other like minded individuals in Delhi.

Seminar on Gorkhaland
This is the first seminar in Delhi that will have national leaders speaking on the issue of Gorkhaland. Congress Rajya Sabha member Mani Shankar Aiyar, Darjeeling MP and former union minister Jaswant Singh, former minister of state and Lok Sabha member Ajay Maken, former union Home Secretary RK Singh, TRS politburo member and former Lok Sabha member Vinod Kumar and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha spokesperson and MLA Harka Bahadur Chettri. Senior journalist Swaraj Thapa will moderate the proceedings .

There will be a second session on the issue of Indian Gorkha identity where the speakers are eminent cinematographer Binod Pradhan who has directed the camera for "Bhag Milkha Bhag" and "Rang De Basanti", former Indian hockey team captain Bharat Chetri, author Prajwal Parajuly author of “The Gurkha's daughter”), Sonam Sherpa, lead guitarist of "Parikrama" and senior journalist Joel Rai.

Basic objective is to influence public opinion and mould views of the political class as well as executive on the issue of separate state of Gorkhaland comprising #Darjeeling and surrounding areas. The idea is to help clear misperceptions relating to Gorkhaland issue through seminars, public discussion, debate, research and publications.
