Kalimpong Celebrate 150yr being a part of India, Will work to make Kalimpong a separate District - Dr H.B.Chettri

Writes Nisha Chettri

An opening ceremony of 150th year of freedom from Bhutan and its annexation to India was celebrated with the speeches of retrospection by orators like H.B Chettri and Ganesh Mani Pradhan in Town Hall today, where a yearlong anniversary celebration has been decided to be celebrated soon.
The significance of the date was extolled after the article published in Statesmen by Sandip Jain- the editor of Himalayan Times. And a discussion with few people made Morcha of Kalimpong Sub-Division committee decide, to keep the historical date alive by an awareness ceremony.

separate District - Dr H.B.Chettri
People of different political parties like Nanita Gautam of T.M.C, Dilip Pradhan of Congress, Tara Sundas of C.P.I.M, Kalyan Dewan of G.T.A, etc were present to pay homage to the years of sacrifice which Kalimpong made since time immemorial. The enthusiastic students of Kalimpong College also attended the program with utmost attention.
However H.B Chettri threw light on the importance of preserving the history of Kalimpong, He said ‘Learning about Jhasi’s Rani, Tatia Tope, etc have certainly improved our general knowledge but the requirement to learn about our own freedom fighters like Dal Bahadhur Giri and Jangabir Sapkota is neglected without doubt.’
He thrilled the audience by talking about the local characters which Kalimpong owned years ago and which is unheard today, he also mentioned to approach the education section to include the local history in the texts of the students. ‘We were ruled by Sikkim and Bhutan centauries ago, why we don’t study such histories first?’ he questioned.
Chettri later explained about the wide geography of the town which is 168 square kilometers, whose boundary starts from Sikkim Rangpoo and ends in Bhutan Todaytangta, that’s when he verbally declared to appeal the higher authorities to make Kalimpong a different district. ‘Kalimpong has a wide measurement, it has a large area, I will put up my effort to make Kalimpong a different district.’ Said chettri.
However the talk of the freedom’s celebration has taken a new turn and the student Morcha are positive and enthusiastic to celebrate a year-long program in order to remember and make the students aware of the importance of the date. ‘We would be encouraged to get an opportunity to organize or celebrate the freedom of Kalimpong; we will discuss more about it soon’ Said the central committee president of student morcha, Deep Thapa.

Speaking to journalists later, DDUDF apex committee chairman and BGP president Enos Das Pradhan said Sonam Tshering has been elected as the convener of the sub-divisional election committee along with seven other members, including the CPRM’s Mohan Paudayal, BGP’s PK Pradhan, AIGL’s Pratap Khati and GRNM’s Dawa Pakhrin.

Pradhan said more election committees will be formed at the municipal and block levels to campaign for independent candidate Dr. Mahendra P Lama at the grassroots. The meeting as resolved to hold an interactive programme at the town hall here on March 31 where various community and religious organisations including representatives from educational institutes, civil society and students will also be invited. Further, the election committee will host a public meeting at Mela Ground on April 12 and several other functions will also be held in various places, informed Pradhan.

He also urged the GNLF to support Lama saying, “Ghisingh is the one who ignited the dream of statehood among us. It may be via the Sixth Schedule, but his ultimate goal is a Gorkhaland state. Dr Lama is in a mission to fulfill the dream he ignited. Ghisingh must support Lama at this crucial juncture.”

Taking a dig at the GJM and the BJP, Pradhan called them “fake pro-Gorkhaland” forces, adding no basis remains for believing their claims. He said, “People such as Ahluwalia are fake pro-Gorkhaland forces. They talk one thing in the parliamentary constituency and in another way in their manifestos. The BJP has not mentioned Gorkhaland anywhere in its election manifesto.”

He also condemned Mamata Banerjee for her speech in Gorubathan saying it was full of “threats”. Pradhan asserted Banerjee’s speech not only intended to “threaten a specific political party”, but was an “aggression on the self-esteem of the Gorkha community” as a whole.

TMC Bhaichung Bhutia - Honesty will make politics an easy game
TMC Bhaichung Bhutia
Despite having no practical experience in politics, working honestly will make it an easy game for him, according to Bhaichung. The man, renowned for his proficiency in soccer, added, “My coach used to say football is a game played with the foot instead of the lips. Thus I don’t want to engage in the politics of lies. I want to work with sincerity in this field. By successfully contesting from Darjeeling, I want to prove elections cannot be won money and muscle power alone.”

Bhaichung admitted he is aware of the people’s aspirations being attached to the Gorkhaland issue, but he will mainly focus on the issues of employment, education, housing and other basic needs. Averring that nothing has been gained from past statehood movements, the TMC candidate said the BJP will also fail to do anything in this regard. He accused BJP MP Jaswant Singh of not even bringing in development to the hills leave alone the formation of a state.

Slamming Singh further, he said, “As per information gained from a RTI filing, 99.9 per cent of the MP fund has been invested in Darjeeling constituency. But for what purposes have these funds been used? There are no records.”

Ahluwalia met the GJM town leadership, party workers, minority community representatives, Hotel and Restaurant Association members and RSS activists. He assured them all of working with diligence to fulfill the aspirations of the hill people if elected to Parliament.

Speaking on his familiarity with the issues related to the region, the BJP candidate said, “I am well aware of the aspirations and problems of the Gorkhas. When the GJM ignited the statehood movement, I played my part of stalling the Sixth Schedule bill in Parliament. As I am acquainted with the problems of the Gorkha community, Bimal Gurung proposed my name from Darjeeling.”

He added, “If elected MP, I will fulfill my responsibility by earnestly raising the issues of the region in Parliament.”

The MP hopeful also said it is certain the saffron party will come to power at the Centre this time. Admitting the BJP government crumbled back in 1998 as it could not win the vote of confidence by a solitary number, Ahluwalia said, “One Darjeeling seat bears a lot of significance. If we can bag this seat, Narendra Modi’s government is certain to form at the Centre and the BJP government that comes to power will be the decisive one for the Gorkhas.”

He also took a dig at the Mamata Banerjee government and termed the recent warrants against GJM leaders and activists as “terror” tactics. “Just a few days ago, GJM leaders Bimal Gurung and Roshan Giri shared the dais with Mamata Banerjee at the Brigade Ground in Kolkata. Why didn’t the police arrest them then? But no sooner did the GJM announce its support to the BJP, the TMC government issued arrest warrants in the names of GJM leaders and workers to unleash a rule of terror,” asserted Ahluwalia.

He said he will submit his nomination papers on March 24 while hinting Narendra Modi may likely visit Siliguri next week as part of his poll campaign.

Kalimpong - 35 GJM workers joined the CPM

10:58 AM
Around 35 workers of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha from Kalimpong subdivision joined the CPM here today, saying the hill party had become corrupt.

Led by Morcha leader Rohit Biswarkarma, the 30-odd youths walked into Anil Biswas Bhawan, the Darjeeling district CPM office. They joined the CPM in the presence of the party’s district secretary Jibesh Sarkar, former minister Asok Bhattacharya and Saman Pathak, the CPM candidate for the Darjeeling Parliament seat.

“We are disillusioned with the Morcha which has become a party of corruption now. Also, we sincerely feel that a permanent solution to the hill problem cannot be found by local and regional parties like the Morcha or Trinamul, which are opportunist,” said Biswakarma.

In the past two-three years, it was Morcha workers who have mostly switched to the Trinamul. Today’s switch was the first time when Morcha workers joined the CPM.

The new entrants into the CPM said Trinamul candidate for Darjeeling, Bhaichung Bhutia, might not solve basic problems faced by the people.

“All of us have joined CPM as we don’t think Bhaichung Bhutia can address our basic problems. We don’t think he can realise the problems faced by us like collecting drinking water from hilly streams because of the absence of water supply. It is only the CPM, which has the grassroots support, can address such issues,” said a Morcha worker.

Another Morcha worker said: “In the name of development, the Trinamul government has created a rift within different hill communities.”

meeting in Kalimpong on Saturday
Branch president Maurice Kalikotay and leaders like Roshan Lama, Anil Lopchan, Sanjay Lama, Taramani Chettri and others stressed on patience, discipline and peaceful politics. The meeting also addressed by women wing branch president Sang Lamu Sherpa, advisors Gayatri Mukhia and Herakumari Tamang, student leaders Vivel Rasaily and Alka Tamang among others.

Kalikotay urged the party workers to expand and strengthen the party in both the rural and urban areas. “We must send a strong message of our resurgence in the hill politics. We must win people’s faith that GNLF can give them political security and direction,” he stressed.

Branch assistant secretary Anil Lopchan asserted on the demand for sixth schedule saying, “Taking a proper look at the complex history and geographical location of Darjeeling, Gorkhaland is more possible through sixth schedule than section 3A of the constitution.”

He also rubbished the allegations that sixth schedule would divide the Gorkha community and called it to be misleading. “Once all the sub-communities living here are granted the ST status where does the question of division arise? Aren’t the mushrooming demands for development boards already breaking the community?” Lopchan questioned. “The truth is the communities are going for development boards because of their dissatisfaction with the GTA,” he pointed out.

Lopchan batted for peaceful politics in the hills and said the party will not think of taking revenge on GJM for all the violence meted out to its supporters. He urged the party workers to move ahead with GNLF chief Subash Ghising’s ideology and agenda.

“The Telangana Bill’s passage proves the consent of the state government is not necessary in remapping the concerned state’s boundaries. We had been stressing this all the while. He added the passage of the T-Bill in the Lok Sabha strengthens the demand for Gorkhaland as it has supported the formation of the smaller state in India by doing so.The GJM has kept aside provisions for scrapping the GTA in the GTA accord and demanding a state.

GJM-TMC Supporters clash in Kalimpong over PHE Contracts

3:35 PM
Exclusive: GJM-TMC Supporters Battle it out in Kalimpong: Clash over PHE Contracts? or Inter-Party feud?

Kalimpong was on edge today, due to clash between Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and Trinmool Supporters. As the report of GJM-TMC clash trickled down, the town started to shut down, causing widespread fear and panic among the residents. So far, reports say that 8 people have been seriously injured during the clash and have been brought to Siliguri.

GJM-TMC Supporters clash in Kalimpong over PHE Contracts
GJM-TMC Supporters clash in Kalimpong
According to GJM supporters, the incidence was a case of “TMC goons starting to terrorize the hill people.” GJM has accused that TMC leader Tshewang Bhutia had been calling the home of GJM supporter Mr. Suman Gurung who lives in Chandralok, Kalimpong and threatening him and his family on a regular basis. On Tuesday 18th of February Mrs. Suprina Thapa, wife of Mr. Suman Gurung had lodged a police complaint against Tshewang Bhutia for threatening her husband and harassing her entire family. Today around noon, as the news of the clash between GJM and TMC supporters broke out, some unknown individuals ransacked Mr Suman Gurung’s house. However, GJM accuse that the police has literally turned a blind eye against the excesses of TMC supporters.

On the other hand Hill TMC president Chewang Bhutia has alleged that GJM youths attacked his party workers with Khukhuris. Sonam Bhutia, Yakin Lamichane, Pravakar Thakuri, Sundar Basnet, Aviraj Ghatani, Sukden Lepcha and party’s Kalimpong youth convener Pranay Thulung were also injured during the brawl along with a few other TMC supporters. Bhutia later called for a press meet and said that 12 TMC activists were in the canteen when around 35 GJM youths attacked them unprovoked, causing serious injuries.

Those who are aware of the situation however say that the clash could have been resulted due to increasing turf war over PHE, PWD and MES contracts and not a clash between political parties. Just that those who are involved in contracts are mostly supporters of either GJM or TMC, because of which it looks like inter-party feud, which it is not.

Once the news of the clash became more common, the shops in Kalimpong had started to shut down, but GJM Yuva Morcha supporters urged the shopkeepers to keep the town open.

Anticipating trouble, police and CRPF have been deployed in Kalimpong and despite the blame game, so far no arrest have been reported

According to Sangathan general secretary Bishnu Chettri, Act has still not been implemented and this is unfortunate on the part of the state government. He said deputations have been sent to the Forest and Environment Ministry along with the Ministry of Tribal Affairs over the issue. The undue delay in implementation has deprived more than 1 lakh forest dwellers across 143 settlements of several facilities.

“These people are worried about their future,” said Chettri. “There are several associations in the forest settlements that have been demanding the implementation of the Act, but the government has turned a deaf ear to their pleas.”
