Man assaulted and attempted to rape Darjeeling woman in Delhi

An unknown man assaulted a 25-year-old woman from Darjeeling and allegedly attempted to rape her in south Delhi’s Munirka on Sunday night.

The woman, a former call centre employee, was walking with two female friends in a lane near Baba Gang Nath Temple when she was accosted from behind by the accused around 10.30 pm.

The woman managed to escape from his clutches. Her two female friends deserted her and fled as soon as they saw her in trouble.

Delhi police officers refused to act even as the victim showed them the direction in which the accused fled. She gave them a full physical description.

According to the woman, the police officers who arrived at the spot following her call to the police control room pressured her not to lodge any complaint.

“The police officers arrived on time but what surprised me was their attitude. They were reluctant to make any effort in nabbing the culprit. I told them the accused assaulted me and tried to forcibly tear away my jaw after putting his hands in my mouth. But they remained unconvinced and unmoved,” she told HT.

“Instead of looking for the accused, they were more into pressuring me not to lodge any complaint. When I insisted on the FIR, they made me change my complaint as many as three times as they were not convinced with the allegations I had made in my complaint. Despite knowing that I was not able to write my complaint in Hindi, they wanted it only in Hindi. It was only after my friend composed the complaint in Hindi did they accept it,” she added.

The woman, who lives in a rented accommodation in Munirka Village with her cousin, was going to drop her two friends at their rented room when the incident took place.
