Paomei Imphal Manipur : Two Gorkhas died in the police firing while protesting rape of 13 year old Gorkha girl by 65 years of age Naga Man. The gorkhas of Kangla Tumbi organised a protest march demanding immediate action on the issue and the arrest of the accused. Reportedly, the Manipur Police had to use tear gas and even resorted to firing in which one of the gorkha protesters died in the police firing.

Enos Das Pradhan BGP President wrote in the social media ” According to the telephonic news just received from our BGP Manipur State Branch a 13 year old Gorkha girl was raped by a 65 year old Naga man at Paomei, Imphal, Manipur yesterday. The girl has been hospitalized. The Gorkha community of Kangla Tumbi took out a protest march and demanded immediate arrest of the accused. The Manipur Police used tear gas and later resorted to firing in which 2 Gorkha protesters died on the spot and more than six Gorkha protesters were hospitalized. There is likelihood of further tension in the area when the funeral procession of these two Gorkha protesters would be taken out today. Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh condemns police brutality and demands immediate action against those police personnel. This is not an isolated incident but Gorkha community as a whole in the state of Manipur have been facing such attrocities at the hands of Police administration and we seek Centre’s immediate intervention for the safety of a minority community.

A 65-year old neighbour reportedly raped a 13-year old girl on Thursday at Paomai Colony, Sangakpham under Heingang Police Station. Decrying failure of arresting the accused by police, locals called indefinite bandh on National High 2 from Friday 6 pm. Meanwhile, a protestor was killed when police resorted to firing to disperse them.
The victim minor girl is undergoing treatment at Kuki Christian Hospital at present. The accused has been identified as one S Mapuni (65) from the same colony. Meanwhile, the protestor, who was killed in police firing has been identified as one Tilak Powell son of Prem Singh Powell from Kanglatongbi Teesbari. Besides him, many other protestors were also injured in police firing. In the meantime, police later arrested the accused Mapuni from Imphal area.
According to the mother of the victim, the accused took her daughter to cast vote in place of his daughter, who is in Delhi at present by luring her with cash. Instead of taking her to the polling station, he took her in a nearby secluded hillside and raped her. As they came out of the hillside, they met a man on scooter and the girl shouted for help. While the two persons were engaged in heated argument over the alarm of the girl, the victim girl escaped stealthily and hide inside the house of an aunt of her at Mantripukhri.
She then went to Mantripukhri to take her home as the victim’s aunt called her and informed about her. The victim then narrated how she was raped by the accused and they went to the hospital where doctors confirmed the claim of the victim.
Reacting against the incident, womenfolk of Paomai Colony and Chingmeirong area stormed the house of the accused and demanded to produce him. In the meanwhile, a team of Heingang Police led by its OC came there and picked up wife and a son of the accused Mapuni.

Meanwhile, All Manipur Gorkha Students’ Union, decrying the failure of police in arresting the accused, called an indefinite bandh on National Highway 2 from Friday 6 pm demanding immediate arrest of the accused. Protestors came out on and blocked the Highway at Kanglatongbi area. Police fired several rounds of Tear Gas shells and live bullets in the air to disperse the protestors. In the process, Tilak was hit by a stray bullet of police. He died on the way to RIMS hospital. Other injured protestors are undergoing treatment in RIMS hospital
