Attack on Bimal Gurung in Darjeeling allegedly by TMC

Allegedly, Bimal Gurung GJM (Gorkha Janmukti Morcha) chief was today attacked by revolver at Birch Hill near Singamari in Darjeeling. Sources says the person on the vehicle bearing TMC flag tried to point revolver at Gurung. Lakpa Sherpa, the security officer of Bimal Gurung, snatched one black bag containing a handmade pistol from Dawa Lepcha who was on that vehicle bearing TMC flag.

Police have initiated a case under the Arms Act and detained Dawa Lepcha for interrogation, purportedly a TMC cadre from Singamari.

“We have detained Lepcha for questioning based on the complaint lodged by Lakpa Sherpa, Gurung’s personal security officer,” informed Darjeeling SP Akhilesh Chaturvedi.

The incident took place reportedly around 9.30 when Gurung was on his way to Kalimpong for election campaigning for BJP candidate S.S. Ahluwalia. The GJM chief had taken the Birch Hill route when Lepcha, a Singamari resident, approached from the opposite direction in a vehicle bearing a TMC flag. An altercation ensued as both sides refused to give the other right of way.

Later, the bag containing handmade pistol handed over to Darjeeling police station with General Diary by Lakpa Sherpa. During the incident GTA Chief Bimal Gurung was on the vehicle, he was on his way to Kalimpong public meeting.
“A country made gun but without any ammunition was recovered from Lepcha’s bag by Gurung’s PSO and the firearm has been handed over,” said Chaturvedi.

“I suspected something inimical was being plotted by the TMC when my security was removed some time ago. I also have information that there is a shoot-at-sight-anywhere order against me issued by the TMC high command and this has been entrusted to anti-social elements and addicts,” claimed the GJM president in his public speech at the Mela Ground in Kalimpong.

Goutam Deb, North Bengal development minister and a TMC leader, condemns these allegations by Bimal Gurung.
